I used to do this with a friend. We both worked for a company that did insurance valuations on total losses. Through the company we could look up in the computer any type of car in our area and get all of them that had been advertised in the paper in the last 6 months. We would find cheaper cars ($1000-$2000 range) and call really old ads on our breaks and lunch. Almost once a week we would find a car that was in the paper for a certain amount (say $1500) and never sold and they would let us have it for half that. We would clean them up, fix them up a little bit and resell them at a nice profit.

Were I live you are only supposed to do 6 cars (like above) before you get a dealers license. We each did six then did a few more on the sly and then we both ended up quitting that job so the great info kind of dried up.
