Lets take a moment to check out the European Diagnostic Criteria for Paranoid Schizophrenia
-----------------------------------
--------------------------
Graham isn't a borderline case. He is a full blown schizophrenic that satisfies more criteria than most.
This part of his illness related to "bibliomancy" is simply a self defense mechanism to protect the ego. Remember, he can either confront his illness and his world comes crashing down and he experiences a full blown meltdown... or, he NEEDS to find some mechanism to enable him to delude himself in a somewhat believable manner that he's not really sick.
Doing that means satisfying this inner need to affirm his delusions regarding his greatness as being supernatural (in more ways than one) and as he's said a few times, that he's "God".
What did he do? Kinda clever... the mind is a resourceful machine. He gravitated towards this idea of "Bibliomancy" - which as anyone can see requires no skill or talent since the answers are always vague, ambiguous and in some manner, loosely applicable no matter what the "question" is since you get to define the answer after the fact. In other words, like all psychics and similar "paranormal bullshit" - there is little specificity. No one can tell you that you have $11.31 in your pocket.... or "you'll witness a car wreck between a 1992 blue Honda accord and 2005 beige 460 Lexus at the intersection of 1st and Elm at 1:31 pm" And this is exactly what he needs. He takes those vague and ambiguous answers, ties them together with loosely connected ideas, calls it a solid answer and declares himself a prophet. Now if you want to challenge it, you get locked in unwinnable arguments, which are centered on statements/"answers" which are unprovable as being correct or incorrect. He wins that little game every time. This is how psychics work. This is how religion works. This is how almost any system of beliefs work. This is how delusion works.
This is also how he explains the "Trueman" idea - that his life is being recorded and broadcast. As with this idea of "Bibliomancy" He can't offer direct proof... he can only point you to the "clues" and tell you they're incontrovertible proof, and then should you deny that, just explain that you're dumb, blind, brainwashed by the media etc. He won't listen to reason because (a. he's unreasonable) but also because he relies on these "clues" to affirm his delusions as the idea itself being real. and that let's HIM off the hook for being mentally ill. "you're not paranoid if they're really watching you..."
Remember.. he has a tough choice... let himself believe he is God-like and special/better than other men in every way... or let all that come crashing down and confront his illness and seek treatment and be a nobody with a common mental illness that needs medication to function, even at a low level.
The sad thing about this situation is that he can make the choice to get help at any moment but his ego won't have it.
