I have apartment insurance, we had a fire in my building almost 2 years ago...and were lucky it was in a basement apt...were on the 2nd floor. We did have some smoke damage. When we new it was time to leave, I did grab an external hard drive and a couple of cd's with images. My wife grabbed our wedding album, important documents, and some coach bags. (All I really cared about was images of my family and photos I have taken from Handball events.)
If you need to protect some stuff, stick it in your fridge, depending on how serious the fire is...the metal should protect it from damage.
It is best to prepare for something in case it happens, many times things will happen when your not home though. So take photos of your values, and save receipts of high end items. Every 2 years I place images on external hard drives and ask my mom or sister to hold them somewhere in their house.
