In Britain, certainly, accident and emergency doctors have reported seeing an increasing number of cases of chest pain brought on by cocaine, and in particular by cocaine and alcohol mixed. It seems that, in this country at least, our insatiable thirst for booze ? and lots of it ? on a Friday night is encouraging injudicious and excessive cocaine use.
The combination of a lot of alcohol and cocaine puts an acute strain on the cardiovascular system ? even more than either booze or cocaine taken on its own. In a small number of cases it can kill, suddenly. If it?s true, as seems to be the case, that more people than before are regularly over-doing things in this way, then we will see more sudden deaths in the 20 to 40 age group.
