I think any money that Sony may have made off of this was pretty much nil in the broad scope of Sony's financial revenues.
RATM is a great choice for this, as they are probably as subculture as you can truly get for such a big named band, they are likely to have files on them with intelligence agencies I'm sure.
I'm not so sure that the appeal of this campaign was actually anti-Cowell or anti-"the man", as much as it was more an anti-mainstream protest and show of hatred for the majority of people and their tastes in music and culture overall
