A model 870 Remington Wingmaster makes a great shottie for under $1k. Get yourself a couple boxes of clays, your shotgun, and a couple buddies, and you'll have a blast.

Wingshooting is way more fun than target shooting with a rifle or big game. Any day, hands down.

270 is a good round like jewcat said but a bit expensive for shooting target

for target and occasional hunting i would look at ruger or remington, they both make a nice bolt action rifle chambered in 7.62 x 39 (ak47)

so you have a nice bolt action accurate scope rifle thats cheap to shoot and plenty of knockdown power for up to deer size animals
