when people Don't Pay, why do they make up excuses?

When people don't pay, why do they make things worse by making up excuses?

It would be much more tolerable if they would just tell the truth that they don't have the money to pay, at least it would be honest, as you can't get blood out of a stone. Hearing the typical sickness/familly problems/internet problems/bank issues is pretty cliche,

it would be better if they just tell the truth and say "I am flat broke, I am going to be a week late on my rent for the roof over my head as it is and I barely have enough to eat a meal a day at the moment"...

... that is better than hearing "my dog is sick and my bank mixed up my deposits so I can't get it sorted out until I get back from this European business trip, but you will get all your money within an hour of my plane touching down"
