It's not that surprising to me. Most people when confronted by death either try to avoid the person at all costs or they patronise the person to the extreme, effectively treating the person like a baby.
What I choose to do is to treat the person the way I would like to be treated, as normal as possible through the end.
You can only do what you can handle. If you think you're strong enough to do that for her I think that would be a very noble thing for you to do.
