I look at it like this:

There are two sides to the movie business. There is the product side and the art side. They remake movies like Red Dawn because it was a hit once and now they will remake it and cast it with current hot young actors and it will be a hit again. Some people my age that remember the original might go see it to see how it is and young people will go see it because it looks cool, has actors they know in it and they have no idea it is a remake. It will make money. Same with the A-team movie and half the movies that are made these days. They are a product. They want to make something they feel will appeal to the masses and sell.

The second side is the art side. These are movies that are made because the creators want to create something artistic, meaningful and interesting. They may be very commercial and successful, but that is not necessarily the reason they are made. They are made because they are good ideas and make good movies.

You need the first for the second to exist. A lot of the artistic movies are box office failures. They often lose money or just barely break even. The product movies rake in the cash not just in ticket sales and DVD sales but in merchandise and licensing. Making a product movie like Transformers gives the studios the cash to take a chance on making a smaller more artistic movie without having to worry about it making money. So while I often get a little frustrated with the dreck that comes out of Hollywood, I understand that it is a necessary evil.
