It's rare, but it does happen. Here are a few that I at least think hold their own-
Cape Fear (Scorcese Version)
The Painted Veil (starring Ed Norton)
Dawn of the Dead (recent remake, same theme totally different movie)
The Blob (80's Version)
The Thing (John Carpenter /
Wuthering Heights (Ralph Fiennes / Juliette Binoche ver)
Batman- can't say the recent series doesn't kick the shit out of anything that's been done previously.
Sometimes people can take a classic theme or work of literature and retell it in their own way, like DeNiro as Frankenstein's monster or Gary Oldman in Coppola's adaptation of Dracula. Shakespeare constantly gets updated and retold fro different angles. It's not always a bad thing if they can bring something to the table to make it better like a new perspective.
The problem with remakes is when they change very little and just try to stylize it to match the director like Rob Zombie's Halloween, etc.
