Batman- can't say the recent series doesn't kick the shit out of anything that's been done previously.
Sometimes people can take a classic theme or work of literature and retell it in their own way, like DeNiro as Frankenstein's monster or Gary Oldman in Coppola's adaptation of Dracula. Shakespeare constantly gets updated and retold fro different angles. It's not always a bad thing if they can bring something to the table to make it better like a new perspective.
The problem with remakes is when they change very little and just try to stylize it to match the director like Rob Zombie's Halloween, etc.

actually the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre is - besides a few funny moments like when they try to give the hammer to Grandpa - kind of boring. nothing but running and screaming. the remake with Jessica Biel was way more entertaining
