I have had canons since 2002 and have never had a shutter pack it in. I had a 1ds mark2 and it performed beautifully. That is a battleship camera. I beat the living crap out of it. Never had an issue.
Shutters were a problem with some cameras because the original shutters were designed for film cameras and no one ever shot that many images because they cost too much. But at the price of fixing it, I would have just bought a new camera. Its the way things go in photography. However, you got 38k of great quality images, so you haven't lost a thing. But technology has moved on. I currently shoot with a much less expensive 5D and it is the most fun I have ever had with a still camera.
edit: that is the first 1D shutter failure that I have ever heard of.
