Society dictates a lot of things that people really should not be doing. Marriage, in my mind, is an archiac and out dated ritual. On top of that it is something that is ingrained into the heads of women from the time they are very young, not all, but most.
Most people have no clue who they are, let alone how they should actually function inside of a partnership. Yet, they get married, then start to realize that they are completely different and want different things from life. Therefore they end up divorced, or miserable.
If people spent more time figuring out what makes them happy, and what brings them joy in life before they jump into long term relationships, they will find they will be far happier in the long run.
This is also why the divorce rate drops a ton when people wait till after 30 to get married.
