did you install the blackberry desktop manager ?
i use outlook so i dont know anything about thunderbird but for outlook i can sync from usb or bluetooth using the blackberry desktop software which you download for free from blackberry.

I was always told that wifi Blackberries were the ones to have because you could just hop on hotspots instead of using up your data plan to do web browsing and such. I have email on my plan, but no data. It's still ridiculously priced for data in Canada. ( http://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.por...at egory=data) It's $25 more a month just to get 500mb of data, and pretty much the only time I would use it is for synching.
