It has nothing to do with registered gun owners not knowing how to "handle" guns. Outlaw guns and guess who will still have guns, the criminals.
at least compare apples to apples and talk urban per capita stats. here are 5 year old stats, but things have not changed that much in 5 years...

# 34 United States: 0.808 per capita 2005
# 37 Canada: 0.801 per capita 2005

Here is a nice article about high rates of gun ownership and lax gun laws in some US States from last year - http://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2009/05/06-1

It never ceases to amaze me that people add 2+2, end up with the answer 'potato' and think they're right.

This may startle you, but having a country with gun owners who know how to properly use, maintain and store their firearms is not a bad thing. No shit, registered gun owners aren't the ones committing the crimes. Where do you think the criminals are getting the guns from? They aren't planting them in the yard and growing crops of them.

The moment you make any comment about gun control, a lot of American gun owners automatically assume people want to take their guns away and that the criminals are going to kick in their door, assrape their prize poodle and spray paint a cock on their plasma TV.

Please explain to me what is so bad about forcing people to learn to use a gun before allowing them to own one? Do you honestly think people who are properly trained how to use the weapons they own are going to be *less* effective against someone attempting to commit a crime against them?
