Yep. You hit the nail on the head. EVERY disaster/tragedy is to them a sign from God that he is about to drop the big one on the USA. The Fred Phelps family is the extreme example of this kind of thinking. On the one hand, you want to hit them in the heads with baseball bats because of the cruel things they do and say at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. But on the other hand, you kind of feel sorry for them when you see that they are really a very scared group of people who believe the YHWH of the OT is going to rain fire and brimstone down upon the heathen nations of the earth. They are the poster children of how religion, taken to the extreme, can damage minds beyond repair.
