I shoot as a team with Forrest Black and some models respond more to him shooting and some to me and some it makes no difference. You are probably right that sometimes it could be a gender thing. We try to adjust depending on the person.
Conceptually, it is my goal to get as much of the model's personality, a sort of best day view of it as someone into them would view them, on camera. And I prefer to shoot subjects who have something interesting about them besides modeling.
