It really depends on what you want out of your life. I have three different friends that all work for big companies. One has a bachelors degree and the other two don't. Each of the two that don't have degrees have pretty much maxed out where they can go in the company. One of them has two associates degrees and a ton on different networking certificates. Realistically, going to school to get a degree in computers with a focus in being a network admin (which is what he does now) will net him next to zero new knowledge. However, he has been told that he won't get any big raises or promotions until he does. The same with the other guy. He is good at his job, but won't be promoted or get much more money until he gets a degree. In both cases when they ask why the degree is so important they are told the same thing: Getting a bachelors degree shows that you are able to make a commitment, stick to it and follow through on a goal.

The guy that has the degree has been promoted several times in the last few years. Just recently the company needed to lay off a few people. One of them should have been him, but since he has a degree they actually laid off people that didn't and had him take over the jobs those people were doing.

If your goal is to get a good job within a company and work your way up the company ladder, a degree is something you should focus on first. If you want to be your own boss, start your own company or do something else, maybe you don't need one.

Of the two guys I mentioned above that don't have degrees, one of them (the network admin) is going back to school in the fall part time to work towards getting the degree. The other has been working on his own business on the side and it is starting to pick up nicely so it looks like he will be transitioning into that more in the future and not going to school
