He made an attempt at humor and he failed. In don't think what he said was intentionally racist, just very poor taste. Talking shit like that is fine if you're in a bar surrounded by your buddies, but when you're talking to a reporter of a largely circulated magazine, not so much.
John Mayer is a fucking douche. I don't listen to his music or follow his career in any way but it seems just though mainstream media outlets like CNN and HLN, etc I'm always hearing about this guy and the douchey things he says. I don't know why he still has a fanbase of women who think he's this caring, sensitive guy. What am I missing?
