I think nothign will happen, just like with every other prophecy. Since the dawn of man, the end of the world has been just around the corner. May 5th 2000 when all the planets aligned was supposed to end the world too.
Logic dictates that the mayan calendar has to end EVENTUALLY, it can't go on forever. Were they supposed to set it up for an extra 1000 years just for our benefit so we don't have to worry? They were already nice enough to plot it ahead as many years as they did.
What are the odds the world would end on the winter solstice? I would be more worried if they picked some completely random date that had nothing to do with anything to end it on.
