Yes, it will slow you down a bit, and in fact, my experience with truecrypt is that the longer you run it, the slower things get. Plus, you have to enter a long (I think it's 16 character) truecrypt password every time you boot up

You might try just encrypting a particular folder and put your sensitive stuff there
