Cool stuff - always liked both the Z4 and the mk IV design a lot - I heard the 25th anniversary edition was made as the standard mk IV GTI should have been made
I plan to follow a similar path - buying a BMW this year - I've had the Golf from new so it's time for a change. I am considering the M3 e46 or the new 335i coupe. I am leaning towards the 335i since I've got a feeling that 95% of the time I will appreciate its GT characteristics over the slightly more extreme M3.
