Just for a little perspective the "In god we trust" wasn't put on our money till 1951 and that was during anti-communist fervor which associated atheism and godlessness with the reds. Also, the founding fathers were not religious to the point where you could almost consider them the atheists of their time and they certainly wouldn't be considered evangelical in any sense of the word. Hence, why the whole separation of church and state thing was so important.
