Many reasons:
1. Snow: Too many changes in temperature and lots of rain turned to ice = ruts everywhere.
2. No new snow: they just scrape off that new stuff and get back down to the ice because it's faster.
3. Flat light: no-one can see where they are going.
4. The course is all turns especially at the bottom. It's more like a Super-Super G race.
5. So much pressure to do good = alot of people taking huge risks because it's do or die.
I used to race/compete in 2 things that were very different but very similar: Moguls and downhill. They are both described as "As fast as posible, chaos right on the verge of being totally out of control" = lotsa crashes.
