R.I.P. reminds me of final destination
CHANDLER, Ariz., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A spectator was killed at the Firebird International Raceway by a tire that flew off a racing dragster, authorities in Chandler, Ariz., said.
The woman died Sunday after being hit by a tire from Antron Brown's dragster in a race at the Arizona Nationals, a series sponsored by the National Hot Rod Association.
The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken by helicopter to Good Samaritan Medical Center, in Phoenix, where she was pronounced dead, The Arizona Republic reported Monday. Brown was not injured.
The 8,000-horsepower dragster's left-rear wheel and tire flew off shortly after Brown accelerated from the starting line. His car flipped onto its right side, spun across the track and hit a retaining wall. A safety crew extinguished a burst of fire from spilled fuel after the car came to a stop.
