They're not supposed to look good or get good gas mileage. They're supposed to have a ton of armor and a 50 cal on it and be functional.
They were just "citizenized" because people wanted to buy them at the time. Now people aren't willing to spend 100k on a 4 passenger truck that gets 3 mpg and is too wide to get on most offroad trails.
Pretty cool that you can drive up near vertical walls though.
