I believe in the NILF theory : Nothing in Life is Free. Make the dog work for everything it gets, even if it's just a sit-stay before dinner. It builds respect and attention and patience. But you have to be consistent! If you ask the dog to do something, then GIVE UP, the dog will learn that obedience is an option, not a mandatory thing.
