To cross the border as a canadian into the USA you need a passport, nexus card, or the new high tech drivers license to get across.
As an American coming up to Canada usually you can tell them where your from and where your going and they waive you through. Its a 50/50 chance that they ask for identification.
I cross the border multiple times each month and this is my experience crossing in the buffalo area

You need a passport either way
