My suggestion to you is write the debt off until Vegas in January. Ask him if he'll be there, he usually is. Tell him you want to be paid when you're in Vegas. FIND him in Vegas and reiterate your wanting to be paid. I'd guess he'll have a cheque in your hand the next day.

He owed me $2500ish for over two years and always had an excuse. When I ran into him in Vegas a couple of years ago, he handed me a cheque. I half expected it to bounce, but it went through. It took a couple of years, but I did get paid.
