When you buy a top domain, then its probably because you want to make a top site in its category.
And no matter if its news, sports, movies, adult etc., then people/surfers only remember a handful of sites. Becoming one of these "top" sites takes resources, where efficiency of each resource pays off. You choose a top domain because its helps you becoming more efficient in the other areas where you are also spending money (SEO, branding, viral/media, industry etc.).
Of course you should never use all of your money on only the domain - just like you should not use all your money on only one thing (traffic, content, software, servers, mangement etc.). Its the sum of things which makes a good site
