But it
is in the power of the US government. They can do what they want to who they want. You can be the most well armed, hardcore anti-government freedom loving patriot in all of the US, but they'll come in and do what they want to you, when they want to, and you'll either submit, or be killed while resisting. They need more money? They introduce more/new taxes. You pay them. They need to build some kind of super duper anti-terrorist facility in your neighbourhood because of it's strategic location? You get a bit of a cash payout and a "see you later" as they roll your house off the side of a mountain, no arguing allowed, as they'll kick you out anyway.
Face it folks, modern governments are massively powerful and they do what they like, when they like. Even the most freedom loving, liberty sexing, I-hate-my-government people will get steam rolled and can't do shit about it.
Those massive bailouts? Lots of people said no. Government said "fuck off" and did it. Protesting invasions of Afghanistan or Iraq? Government said "fuck off" and did it. Disagree with healthcare reform? Government will say "fuck off" and do it, because they can. And you'll just have to bend over and take it.
