Jenni, if you're reading this, as I understand it, you go to a smaller bank -- like a community bank -- and setup some type of account (they can tell you the type -- may be called memorial fund) where the wife is the beneficiary. Then, people send checks or money orders directly to the bank and they handle processing.
I have donated to a few funds for the deceased this way ... they set them up like that so that people are comfortable in knowing that the intended recipient gets the money.

Bigger banks will do it too - BofA, Wells Fargo, US Bank. That way a lot of ppl can just stop at a branch of the bank and deposit into the acct.
