Then there is the most scary of all, for-profit prisons. A deep-pocket industry who's sole purpose for existing is keeping lots of people in jail to keep lots of money rolling in. They lobby the hell out of congress and will work hard to make sure that even simple possession is not decriminalized. How else are they going to keep those cells full of paying customers?

Sadly this is the case. As much as any politician might talk about shrinking the government, none of them ever actually do it. Once the government creates a job, those with that job do everything they can to hold onto it. There would still be other drugs the DEA and those could go after, but legal pot would lessen their workload and more importantly it would limit the taboo that they have worked decades to create around it. That won't be something they will easily give up on.
