The pope shouldn't resign - religion should just be abolished.
I mean, you should be free to pray to - and worship - however and to whatever you like. Doing so should not garner you any societal or financial benefits, though. People that believe that there's an invisible man who lives in the sky should be laughed at, not encouraged.
