They opened fire on the van which did appear to have just turned up to clear up the mess. However I have no idea whether there has been a similar situation previously where the tidier-uppers tidied up and then picked up and used the RPGs the helicopter crew thought they saw which would make them extra jumpy.
Of course the military doesn't tell the media everything. The media participate in things so that they can get stories out first but they are also used by the military to both present things in a good light to the public at home and to make up misleading shit to confuse the enemy. [this is where I should be posting the pic of that Iraqi Minister saying everything was fine and the Americans were running away but I've forgotten his name]

you're right.. i can't clearly make out if the two moving shapes in the passenger side window are, or possibly were, children. My point was if i could make out there is someone in that seat, a helicopter pilot who does that everyday all day long would be able to decipher if there is in fact children in the very seat he's aiming his 30mm Chain gun at
and, of course, see that they were collecting a wounded reporter and not in fact touching any bodies, or had any weapons
