I hired two very good friends to work at my company...
We had an awesome run of 4 years and even when we had to close down shop there were no hard feelings and they both told me it was the best job they ever had and they wouldn't have traded the time for anything.
It can work, you just have to know how/where to draw the lines. My business partner was also a good friend (and still is).
