yes, unless the site has a lot of text, I like dark backgrounds: black, maroon, dark blue. Some posters mentioned Facebook and newspapers, but unless we are talking about some social site or adult search engine, I don't think black will affect anything and I really like the dark bg approach. This being said, if it's some kind of social site, using anything dark will kill your site for sure
