What a terrible thing to happen.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Drivers today are out of control whether it be by distraction, under the influence or just plain ignorant with little driving skills. Today I can drive from one side of town to the other and see 100 ticketable offenses by other drivers. It wasn't like that when I first got my license 35 years ago. I wonder what the roads would be like if all the people that didn't have a valid driving license were actually not driving.
I'm 100% a defensive driver and use the rear view mirror as much as the windshield. It's very important to know what's going on all around you at all times. When I stop at a light I always leave enough room between me and the car in front just in case I need to make an evasive move. It could be to avoid getting carjacked or to avoid getting hit by an out of control car but I always give myself a chance.
The bottom line is driving a car is a mode of transportation and the goal is to get from point A to point B safely. Why people insist on taking unnecessary risks putting their lives or the lives of others in jeopardy is beyond me.
