Frankly I have infinitely more respect for people who don't have a sig rather than sticking a sponsor's banner down there hoping to make some chump change from a webmaster referral.

It depends on how you use the boards. A BROgram owner will tell you that the industry boards are tool in the arsenal to marketing and promotion. I am paraphrasing, but that's essentially the meat of the point.
I do not own a program, but make a lot of money off the boards. As those I am partnered with could easily verify. Whether experienced, or not. People use the boards for tracking down deals, content they want, scripts hosting among many other things.
It is a social outlet for many. Some of us get a lot of current events from the boards. A lot of use make money off the boards. In the past month I have made more than 90% of GFY will all year. Between site sales, hosting, and content deals. So for me, it is worth the hassles I deal with.
The boards are a tool in the arsenal. But it depends on if you are a B2B or what your role is in the industry. If you market to surfers, then you're right. Flying your shit may not be of use. But for Joe or Loch as content brokers for example, the hosting companies, the billing processors, affiliate programs... the board and sig is a useful way to get business and promote your wares.
