The thing to take away from all of this is that surfers want to feel closer to the girls and the content, and when they feel tantalizingly close, they will start buying again. A pic of a regular girl seems really attainable and close to home, so you feel buying it will get you that much closer. In retail, there are countless studies that show if someone holds a product in their hand, they are several times more likely to buy it. I think "reality" style adult content is the online equivalent of holding a product in your hand. It seems so close.

People want the internet to facilitate them getting closer to what they want or like. It's not just a clearing house of information anymore.
