SEC Scandal Underscores the Instructive Power of Porn
Quote:
So, an internal report from the SEC has indicated that many of its employees spent as much as eight hours a day surfing "adult websites" at the very time when AIG, Lehman Brothers, and Goldman Sachs were making the careless, greedy moves that led to the financial meltdown of 2008. No wonder they were asleep at the switch. Anybody would crave a nap after doing what one does while looking at that much porn.
But the folks who are getting so upset about all this are missing the point completely. What is supposed to be so surprising here? Nearly all of these guys cut their teeth at Wall Street brokerages, widely recognized as the most sexually toxic work environment outside of the Catholic church. These men are going to look at porn. Short of gutting the financial industry entirely and starting over, nothing is going to change that. So, to the people who now say that they tried to warn their superiors at the SEC but were roundly ignored, I'd argue that you should have known this fact and factored it into your approach. If you ask me, this was all the fault of underlings at the SEC for not making their reports sexy enough. If they had, for example, laced their early concerns about the credit default swap market into hardcore pornography, it is possible, even likely, that the economy would still be booming today.
