He didnt know how to divide it equally, so he gave them each a dollar and kept the other $2 for himself. So each of the 3 guys paid $9 and the bellboy has $2. lets add. 25(which was the total)+3(which the bellby gave back)+2(which the bell boy kept)=30. In just numbers without the reasoning its 25+3+2=30. Lets multiply. 9(which each of the guys paid)x3(the number of guys)+2=$29, in just numbers thats 9x3+2=29.
Where is the other dollar?

There is no other dollar. Each man put in $9 towards the cost of the room: 3 x $9 = $27. The bellboy has kept $2 from what the men spent for himself: $27 ? $2 = $25. The motel has collected $25.
