He has fallen for the mounds of marketing hype on the thesis site obviously.
I've got a developers license for thesis and it's great. I use it on 6 or 7 sites. It's nice to be able to toss a few lines of code into the custom functions file and then make some changes to the custom.css file and it's done.
If you're going to create a completely custom theme anyway though then thesis is an unnecessary hurdle.
