I started a facebook account and promptly never visited it for ages. Now, every family member I ever heard about seems to be on there, as well as other aquaintances. I think if I ever log in there, the first order of business is to disapprove a bunch of people who just happen to know my name. Facebook probably just suggested they add me anyway.
