I can't just walk into Canada and start a new life. Hell even Mexico is strict on their immigration laws.
You’re missing the point. They are illegal - Illegal traffic mules. They are not immigrants.

These guys are not moving permanently. They are just committing crime of drug trafficking.
Don’t listen to this clueless moron TheDoc. Nobody is saying that you can just walk to Canadian border and start a new life. It takes time to get necessary paperwork done, but its doable. It takes a year or a bit longer but the are ways of doing it the legal way. Here in the states it takes 6 years for close family member just to get their cases open and read by immigration officials. INS is nothing but a big backlog. Its virtually impossible to immigrate legally to the US unless you marry one of come as a refugee. Temporary work visas (H-1B) are very hard to get now because of high rate of unemployment among US citizens and seasonal workers are only in certain industries like meat packing and farming. Not everyone would want to bust their ass for 6 bucks in middle of Arkansas on some chicken farm.
Immigration is a federal matter that should have been addressed long time ago by Bush and now Obama. They need to revamp the entire system, implement faster processing and add new types of temporary workers.
