I think it would be soooo much better. It simply makes too much sense to actually be put into use here in the U.S.

The problem I see with it is this-
If you can tell from a reasonable distance how many bars or seconds you have until the light is going to turn, someone approaching the red light can judge how much, if at all, they will need to press the breaks to pass the line on green.
You combo someone not coming to a complete stop before the light change, especially someone who doesn't drastically decrease their speed ,with someone coming the other direction that's trying to beat the red - you've got a sweet t-bone on your hands with possibly some serious speed behind it.
