There is a U.S (!) national wide trademark law (of course changed through the years and since 2002/2003 it's called "standard character" instead), which means a series of characters/ big letters without design (e.g. form, composing, color, symbols), as a "drawn" characerisation of a brand.

It's not a word mark, wich would prohibite you to say on your website "Join now to wath XXX movies"... and therefor two other main trademarks would be a unique symbol or a combination of characters and design/ color.
