I've used Elevated X, Site Depth, Awiz and had a custom CMS built. I have not used Carma so I can not comment on that.
Building your own can be a total headache however if it all works out, you win as long as it doesn't break.
If you don't have it in you to go that route hit up AJ at Elevated X. I believe X is the best. While I think X is overkill for the guy just getting started, it is still a wicked CMS. As a suggestion to AJ, a "Elevated Light" option would be very good for smaller sites, new guys, or people who just don't need all the extra bells and whistles or prefer to do their own encoding.
