They aren't trying to claim it's a better search engine than Google... because it isn't. They are claiming it's a less 'noisy' search engine that lets you find specific niche information without wading through all the other somewhat relevant noise.
Social Networks are another way to eliminate noise essentially. Closed networks where some people bring information in for others. Your old aunt doesn't have to read chain letters on email any more, she can just go to facebook and get the information you and your internet savvy friends bring to her groups.
I Agree with you 100% on this... it will be HUGE business, and to some extent it already is now...
