That sucks. When I travel, my valuable stuff (camera, laptop, etc.) goes carry-on in a day pack (in a tight plane, they can even take your carry-on luggage and stick it in the hold, but you always get to keep a day pack, because it can go under a seat).
When I shop for coats, I look for ones with lots of pockets so that the coat actually functions as a kind of carry-on holding a CD player and a few CD's and other small items like that.
Don't put anything on your belt: they can count that as a carry-on. Ditto for anything with a shoulder strap. I had a CD in a small (6"x6"x1") bag over my shoulder once. They told me if I didn't put it in my pack, it'd count as a "personal item" (and I was already counting on my day pack as the personal item). I pointed out how absurd that was and they just shrugged. Rules are rules, I guess, and you don't want to protest too much in the security line or you may get taken into the back room and cavity searched! So, I made room for it in the pack, which was already bursting at the seams.
Coats and jackets aren't regarded as luggage.
